Looking across to Ramsey Island

Ramsey Island covers over 640 acres and is currently owned and run by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). It is two miles long and rises to 446 feet and is the fourth largest island in Wales. It comprises sedimentary, volcanic, and igneous rocks, which is very unusual, given the relatively small size of the island.

It was originally owned by the Church until the early 1900’s when it was sold into private ownership and farmed until the 1960’s. At a later stage it was also a deer farm.

The RSPB purchased the island in the 1990’s, as it was an important breeding site for many endangered species, which include choughs and peregrines. The island has a full-time warden, as well as many volunteers who provide help during the summer months.

The island is very important as a breeding site for grey seals, with over 400 seal pups being born each year in the autumn. Ramsey is also noted for its soaring cliffs, which are the home of thousands of gulls and auks. Here you can also find ravens, buzzards, and the incredible Manx Shearwaters.

There is also considerable area of heathland, which is widely recognised as one of the very best places to spot the rare red legged chough.

The island is open to visitors on a daily basis throughout the summer months and going on a boat ride around Ramsey is totally spectacular… providing a wealth of wildlife and spectacular scenery.

Ramsey is one of many islands in Pembrokeshire, including Calder, Skomer, Skokholm and Grassholm. There are also scores of little islets and rocks.

We think that Ramsey, which is less than a mile out to sea from St David's peninsula, and only a short distance from Ty Gwilym Holiday Cottages, is the most amazing of them all.

It’s an island of spectacular beauty with an abundance of wildlife and scenery. It has a rich historical past and is well worth a visit if you should ever find yourself in the area.
